Community Health Education Specialist
Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in health education or health promotion. Three (3) years of full-time experience in community health education. Experience with Microsoft Office and/or Google Docs. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications:
Additional years (4+) of full-time experience in the field of community health education. Experience in community cancer prevention/care education. Certification from the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.* Knowledge of survey software applications such as Qualtrics, RedCap, or other. Bilingual English/Spanish.
* If the certification is not complete by the hire date, it will be required for the selected incumbent to complete the certification within six (6) months of employment.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Community Health Education Specialist will support the mission of Stony Brook Cancer Center's Office of Community Outreach & Engagement (COE) by developing and delivering evidence-based health education focused on cancer screening and prevention strategies. Reporting directly to the Program Manager for Prevention and Screening, the Community Health Education Specialist will be a member of a team focused on developing a robust health education program for our community. The incumbent should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The ideal candidate will be able to interpret work plans and convert a community's needs into cancer-related health and wellness education to the community. Success in this role will be determined by the candidate's ability to provide instruction to the community utilizing strong interpersonal skills, writing and problem solving skills and demonstrate cultural competency. Projects include the Cancer Prevention in Action grant, where cancer education relates to UV awareness, sun exposure, HPV awareness, and vaccination and their role in preventing cancer.
• Evaluate, design, present, and disseminate culturally appropriate health education information and materials, incorporating the PSE change approach and present all information effectively to diverse audiences at locations throughout Long Island.
• Assist in the navigation of patients or community members to relevant healthcare services.
• Stay abreast of all current standards in cancer control and care.
• Perform intakes on new and re-enrolling adults in various educational programs.
• Maintain logs of teaching and educational activities.
• Consult with physicians and staff as needed to develop materials.
• Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
Please note, this position may work weekend hours, set hours are flexible. This position is open for one year with the option to extend depending on funding availability.
