Medical Director, Student Health


 


The University of California San Francisco—a renowned university dedicated exclusively to graduate and professional education in the health sciences—is seeking an experienced physician leader to oversee the clinical care and operations of all medical services within Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS). This primary care center serves a significant portion of the University’s dynamic population of over 3,200 students. The role presents a notable opportunity for a patient-centered physician with well-honed leadership skills, strong administrative experience and acumen, and a genuine desire to make an impact on the holistic health and wellness of students.


 


The Medical Director will lead and inspire a dedicated team of clinicians and ensure the delivery of accessible, high-quality medical care. As the key medical expert on campus, the Medical Director will engage with stakeholders across the University, represent UCSF within the UC system, and build partnerships with healthcare providers and entities in the broader community in support of student health and wellness. This role blends delivery of direct clinical care with a robust administrative and leadership portfolio.


 


Position Summary


The Medical Director reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC)/Executive Director of Student Health and Counseling Services. As a senior clinical leader and member of the senior administrative staff, the Medical Director serves as the Chief Medical Officer and Physician of Record for UCSF SHCS and provides leadership and supervision for the medical, clinical, and public health aspects of the operation. The Medical Director will advocate for student health and well-being, especially that of underrepresented or historically marginalized groups.


 


Under the direction of the AVC, and guided by the mission of SHCS, the Medical Director oversees and supervises the clinical care and operations provided at SHCS. In addition to providing direct patient care, key responsibilities of the Medical Director include the following.


 


• Plans, develops, coordinates, implements, and monitors medical management policies and procedures


 


• Engages in quality, performance improvement, and risk management programs


 


• Provides strategic direction


 


• Oversees the development of clinical information systems that assist clinicians in delivering patient care, and promotes the use of information technology in the clinical setting


 


• Ensures quality care delivery and access


 


• Oversees utilization


 


• Participates in operations and resource management


 


• Serves as a member of the SHCS Executive Committee


 


Required Qualifications


 


• MD or DO from an accredited school of medicine


 


• CA licensed, or eligible to be licensed, as an MD or DO in the State of California


 


• Minimum of 5 years of post-residency clinical practice and 3 years of supervisory experience; experience in college health or managing young adult patients preferred


 


• Strong knowledge of the latest medical research, practices, and technologies


 


• Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills; ability to make critical decisions in a timely and effective manner; flexible and adaptable


 


• Demonstrated capacity to articulate a vision and implement strategies to accomplish it


 


• Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and emotional intelligence


 


• Ability to build positive relationships and effectively communicate with healthcare professionals, students/patients, and other internal and external stakeholders


 


• Understanding of the unique health needs and challenges faced by different populations and an ability to provide culturally appropriate, equitable, and accessible care


 


Preferred Qualifications


 


• Board certification in a specialty area appropriate to the role

SHCS is a multidimensional, integrated center with the following staff working collaboratively to provide integrated care to all UCSF students: Medical (nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians); Mental Health (counselors, psychiatrists, case managers, pre-doctoral interns, postdoctoral fellows); Health Educational Program (outreach coordinator, social worker, health educators, registered dietitian); Administrative and Operational Staff.
