Job Description


 


The University of Nevada, Reno is seeking a collaborative Executive Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to be a driving force in maintaining a safe and healthy campus environment for all. This position reports to the Associate Vice President, Research Administration.


 


The Executive Director will oversee a wide range of responsibilities from campus lab safety and hazardous waste management to radiation protection and occupational health and safety. This individual will also be responsible for developing and implementing education and training programs that inform and engage the university community, as well as for creating emergency safety protocols and participating in the tabletop emergency exercises. The Executive Director will play a critical role in defining and implementing innovative programs and policies that proactively address campus safety and environmental health concerns.


 


The Executive Director will ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations and will serve as a public spokesperson for the University on matters related to EH&S. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining relevant reports, as well as leading the development of IT programs that contain regulatory information.


 


The Executive Director will oversee all human, financial and physical resources related to EH&S and will work to create an organizational culture that values transparent, timely and collaborative communication. The Executive Director will also maintain a strong safety culture and adhere to all safety policies, procedures and regulations, and proactively identify and address workplace hazards.


 


In addition to these technical responsibilities, the Executive Director will also promote and advocate for diversity, inclusion, positive employee relations, teamwork and fair and equitable treatment of their employees.


 


Environmental Health & Safety


 


EH&S specializes in a multitude of program areas to minimize risks across the University and to allow students, faculty and researchers to do their work safely while reducing environmental impacts. EH&S is responsible for ensuring the safety of students, faculty and staff across a wide range of departments, from athletics, the medical school, arts buildings, two state-of-the-art earthquake engineering laboratories to the campus at Lake Tahoe and more.


 


The department provides a wide array of training and oversees policies that govern research and workplace safety. With a dedicated, hands-on training laboratory, our training programs include CPR and first-aid, defensive driving, fire extinguisher, evacuation and a wide range of lab safety topics. We are also proud to oversee a wide variety of labs and spaces on campus. We oversee 250 research groups spanning approximately 800 individual research spaces, two BSL-3 laboratory suites, clean rooms, a standalone hazardous waste facility, greenhouse facilities, Insectariums, Vivariums, creator spaces and farms. Our employees have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers across a range of disciplines, making our work exciting and interesting.


 


Our EH&S advisory committees provide guidance and institutional support, and direct policy and procedures for overall safety in laboratories, workspaces and specialized areas of research including use of certain types of equipment.


 


We are proud to say that our EH&S department has received national recognition for our outstanding work. We were awarded CSHEMA 2015 Marketing Campaign Award of Distinction, the CSHEMA 2017 Innovation Award of Honor, and the CSHEMA 2020 Innovation Award. In Addition, we received the American Chemical Society 2005 NIOSH College and University Award for Outstanding Chemical Healthy and Safety Program, and the American Chemical Society 2022 Safety Status College and University Health and Safety Award.

Required Qualifications


 


Bachelor's Degree and seven (7) years OR;


 


Master's Degree and five (5) years OR;


 


Doctorate Degree and three (3) years of related professional experience.


 


Related experience: Management experience in a multi-component, complex, environmental health and safety program at an academic, government, or industrial institution with scientific and technical research programs or related.

Certification and Licensure


 


Nationally recognized certification in an environmental health and safety discipline such as a Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Health Physicist, or Certified Hazardous Material or equivalent.
